Political Rant

Well this isn't an update as much as it is just a rant. I just had to get a few things off my chest.

Ok, number one: Today in the news I read about two more "creative" court sentences. The first one was for a man convicted of stealing the mail. Of course this is a federal offense, and should not be taken lightly, but do you know what his punishment is? He has to wear a sandwich board in front of a post office saying that he is a thief who stole the mail, and this is his punishment. What the hell?! But wait, number two is just as bad: Another guy was convicted of child abuse, and his punishment is... get this... he has to spend 30 days in his dog house. 30 days in a dog house?! What ever happened to that ammendment that forbids cruel and unusual punishment? (Oh yea, Bush threw out the Bill of Rights with the Patriot Act, I forgot.)

And the other thing I had to whine about is of course the "possible" (my ass) war against Iraq. The whole country is treating it like it's going to be a picnic. Bush always smiles when he's talking about it. We're going to "liberate" the Iraqis (like China "liberated" Tibet, I'm sure) by blowing up their whole country. Bush has said this will be "a dramatic and inspiring example of freedom" and that the Iraqis are living in a "nightmare world". Ok, I don't live in Iraq, and I know it sure isn't a great place to be, but it's certainly not a nightmare world. At the same time, he says that "stable and free nations do not breed the ideologies of murder" after admitting that he is considering breaking the international law of not assassinating foreign leaders just to get Saddam out of there. And if the US is so confident that it is right, and Iraq must be destroyed, then why refuse to accept Saddam Hussein's offer for a one-on-one debate with George W. Bush? Yes, it is definately a last resort to buy more time for Iraq before we kill them all, but agreeing to this debate would certainly do a lot to convince the world (and our own country) that this war is necessary, if indeed it is and the Bush administration is not just blowing smoke out their asses.

And why are we so worried about Iraq when they haven't attacked us, haven't threatened to attack us, and can't even attack us if they wanted to, yet we're paying so little attention or care to the North Korea situation... North Korea has missiles that can hit us, has the capability to make nuclear weapons quickly, and practically wants to go to war with us. Are we sure this war is not [an attempt to fulfill Bush Sr.'s legacy - a war about oil - a war against Arabs]? (Take your pick.)

And my final rant... what is all this talk about "saving democracy" and "creating democracies" all over the world? We talk so much about democracy all the time, it's a wonder that nobody has pointed out that WE ARE NOT A DEMOCRACY! We are a republic. I swear we are, check the pledge of allegiance. If you look up the official description of our government, you will see that we are a "democratic republic". And that word democratic is hardly applicable. We have a two-party system that is rigged to keep out 3rd parties. And the democratic and republican parties are both rich, corrupt people who only look out for themselves and only differ in ideologies ever so slightly. That's hardly better than the one-party systems of the countries we constantly criticize and are taught to hate (think communism). Calling the US a democracy is the same lie that gives us the "Democratic People's Republic of North Korea."

Ok. Rant over. Thank you, I needed that.
